Safety stock is the number of an item that should be kept in inventory to avoid running out of stock. It is calculated as:
Safety stock = (max units*max lead) – (avg units*avg lead)
where
  • max units = maximum number of units sold in a day
  • max lead = maximum number of days to replenish stock
  • avg units = average number of units sold in a day
  • avg lead = average number of days to replenish stock
